Take a stroll and feed a needy family.
CROP - Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. Come out to the Fall 2007 CROP Hunger Walk, on Sunday October 14, in Indian Park in Montoursville.
What is the CROP Hunger Walk?
Neighbors from different faiths, cultures, and ages, walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting agencies. Some 2,000 communities across the country take part each year.
Where does the money go?
CROP Hunger Walks help fight hunger and poverty around the world, including the United States. (According to the Church world Service website about 25% of the funds raised are used locally.) The remaining funds are used by Church World Service to provide global hunger education, disaster relief and self-help projects throughout the world.
In the past 27 years, CROP Walkers in our area have raised over $655,000 to aid in the fight against hunger locally and around the world. This annual event has been supported by the ecumenical community in Lycoming County, bringing the community together for an annual walk in solidarity with people around the world who have to walk every day for every thing. Plan on joining us this Fall as we unite once more to bear witness to our concern over our brothers and sisters and children in need. For more information call: Gwen at 570-322-1110.
Founded in 1946, Church World Service is the relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry of 35 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations in the United States. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries, CWS works worldwide to meet human needs and foster self-reliance for all whose way is hard.
According to the local CROP website blog: “We collected $15,350 for CRO (2006). 25% of that amount comes back to help with our local food needs - $3837.”
You can pick up a registration form at the New Covenant United Church at 202 East Third Street or Pine Street United Methodist Church at 441 Pine Street.
Help to end poverty and hunger. And remember, walking is good exercise!
Last year, a friend emailed me the photo above. At first I thought it was one of those fake “Photoshop rendered” images that are so prevalent on the Internet, but it is real.
Kevin Carter, a South African photographer, traveled to Sudan and found this tragic scene; a vulture waiting for a little girl to die as she struggles to crawl to an aid center about a kilometer away.
The photo won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for photojournalism in 1994.
Many people complained that Mr. Carter did nothing to help the girl. (He shooed away the vulture.) No one knows what became of the child. It is presumed that Mr. Carter was so overwhelmd with guilt that he committed suicide in 1994.
