Not understanding the code can hurt you.
Street Code explained.

The Ways of the Black Ghetto

There is an unwritten code of the streets, not understanding it, or being ignorant of it could cost you your life.

At the core of the “Code of the Street” is the need for respect. And that respect can come from a threat of violence. This is way of the ghetto in every metropolitan urban area in the country. It is way of the streets in Williamsport.

Professor Elijah Anderson of the University of Pennsylvania gives several examples of the social phenomena in his book, “Code of the Street.”

To understand the nature of the social pressures confronting our black youth, I highly recommend reading this book. Mr. Anderson explained things that I already knew, but was never really aware of.
