Academic Excellence. September, 2007
To be young, gifted and black... In Philly?
Celebrating Scholastic Excellence. Brittney Exline, genius.

From the Editor:

When scouring the Internet for interesting stories, sometimes I find the exact same story posted in hundreds of newspapers and websites. The wire services can send one writer’s thoughts, multiplied hundreds of time, around the world.

Take the case of Brittney Exline, the 15-year old student at the University Pennsylvania. She started her freshman class the first week of September. She has already achieved fame just by doing what she loves to do, studying and learning. Her story was told over and over again across the Internet.

I wanted to know more about the young lady. Here’s what I found in the African-American Voice, a local black newspaper in her hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado:

“Brittney Exline Honored by Urban League

2007 Palmer High School International Baccalaureate (IB) graduate Brittany Exline continues to garner awards and scholarships. On June 2 Brittany received the Urban League Scholarship for her outstanding academic and extra-curricular accomplishments; on June 15 she was recognized by the African American Voice as its “2007 Colorado African American Student of the Year” at the 2007 Juneteenth Freedom Awards dinner.

Brittany boasts a long list accolades. She was the youngest IB Diploma candidate in Colorado history, entering at age seven. She was also the youngest math analysis and trigonometry student at age 11. In addition, Brittany received the first Theall Scholarship Award and a National Teenage Academic/ Scholarship Achievement Award.

She is fluent in German and has also studied French, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, and Arabic. Brittany excels in the performing arts and has studied jazz, tap, ballet, and modern dance for more than eight years. Her hobbies include ice skating, logic puzzles, taking I.Q. tests, crafts, watching ‘Jeopardy’ and reading.

Brittney was accepted to Colorado College, Carnegie Mellon, Williams College, and the University of Pennsylvania, and has decided to attend the University of Pennsylvania and pursue a career in chemical engineering and political science.”

Here’s a few other bits of news (from other news sources) about Ms. Exline.

“At 15, Exline is the youngest African American female ever to be accepted into an Ivy League school.” “Brittney's also fluent in German and with her brains and beauty has won several pageant crowns.”

“The level-headed student is taking the changes in her life in stride, ‘Some people would think that being 15 and going off to college is a big deal, but I've been with my class here so long, I'm just as mature as any other senior who's 18.’ ”

I hope all the media attention won’t be so distracting after she settles in. she has a lot of challenges to face for a 15-year old. Being a black college student in Philadelphia ain’t easy. There are many pitfalls that can derail an innocent young student in the big city.

I am praying for her success in college - and in life.

I want to personally thank Mr. James Tucker, CEO and Publisher of the African-American Voice for allowing me to print the Brittney Exline story in its entirety.
